In the far west of
Rajasthan lies the Thar desert. Set amidst endless rocks and sand is
the golden city of Jaisalmer, once a stopover for the caravanserais,
which traveled from China to the Middle East along the Silk Route.
This golden citadel with it's many turrets is where your desert
safari begins.
To experience the unique atmosphere, beauty and total silence of the
desert, we offer you an unforgettable experience. There are
possibilities galore; In a village just 45 minutes drive from
Jaisalmer, we have our own desert camp, complete with everything you
need for a truly unique experience.
Travel for an hour,
an afternoon, a day, three days or more, with jeep and/or camel. We
have our own camels and english speaking guides. A jeep is always at
hand for those who wish to continue their safari on four wheels
instead of four legs!
Visit the Rajput
villages far out in the desert. Meet with their inhabitants who
have never left the desert, many not ever having visited Jaisalmer
itself. Their children will welcome you in their unique way with
true desert hospitality, hoping you might have some sweets in your
pocket! Picknick wherever you like, cook your dinner out in the
wilds. Ride up into the dunes and make yourself comfortable in the
sand to watch the sun set over the desert, drinking tea and
listening to the unique sounds of the "langoza", a flute with one
mouthpiece and two shafts.
An unforgettable evening awaits you when you return to our camp on
camel, your route lit by starlight. Relax on comfortable Indian
style beds named "charpais", maybe with a chilled glass of beer.
The camp is lit with oil lamps and in the winter months a bonfire
will add to the atmosphere. While relaxing, dinner will be served,
accompanied by music from the Manganiyar musicians. Dancers will
give a performance like you have never seen before. With the ever
increasing rhythm of the drums, they pirouette faster and faster
around the bonfire, finishing in a climax which has to be seen to
be believed. These dancers are famous all over the region and are
often requested to dance at Royal Weddings.
Stay in the camp, out in a tent or sleep in the dunes under the
stars. Enjoy the romance and the mystery of such a night. Skies
unlike any in the west, their brightness only accentuated by the
total darkness of your surroundings. If you are looking for more
comfort, return to Jaisalmer for your overnight stay. We have
accommodation to suit all tastes and all budgets - from a clean
simple guesthouse to five star luxury. We also offer unique
programmes in and around Jaisalmer for sightseeing by camel, jeep
or car, always with the services of our local staff to take the
best possible care of you.
